Join us for a lunchtime seminar exploring the Rylands’ collection of Victor Hugo papers, one of the largest collection Hugo papers outside of France. Kevin Morgan (Professor of Politics and Contemporary History, University of Manchester) and Janette Martin (Research and Learning Manager at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library) will explore heartfelt letters of admiration and a magnificently illustrated Livre d’Or produced as a public tribute.

Few writers have ever been so widely venerated as Victor Hugo. After years of political exile, Hugo returned to France in 1870 and for the remainder of his life became the symbol and apotheosis of the reborn French republic. This talk will consider how the author of Les Misérables became consecrated as ‘the love and glory of his people’.

This is an online event that will take place via Zoom. Book your free place here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-love-and-glory-of-his-people-victor-hugo-as-political-symbol-tickets-258599386727

This event is part of a live, online lunchtime seminar series. University of Manchester researchers team up with experts from the Rylands to share current research activities. The seminars will showcase rare and fascinating objects from the special collections, along with discoveries and new perspectives formed through their study. Attendees will be invited to participate with questions and thoughts during the live Q&A.
